Polygamy: Problem for Both Romney and Obama

Yesterday, I talked about how Mitt Romney is Mormon, and me being the coward that I am, that I wished that he wasn’t. This is going to be all the more reason for the anti-Mormon faction to cause problems, which has in fact already started. After I wrote that article, I started doing some searches online, and found several interesting things:

First, a recent Gallup poll found that when people are asked about the LDS Church, the most common thing to pop into their minds is polygamy. Which is rather funny, considering that polygamy was outlawed by the LDS Church in 1890, but apparently old habits truly do die hard.

Second, there are a lot of people worried about Romney becoming president because he is LDS. One issue is (again) polygamy. Yes, Romney’s great-grandparents were polygamists. Most people say that you shouldn’t be held responsible for what your parents did (after all, you didn’t have a choice in the matter) so I find it rather ridiculous that Romney is being held responsible for what his great-grandparents did.

If people truly do believe that a person can be held responsible for what their ancestors did, then this brings me to the third interesting item I found on the net last night:

Obama, one of the forefront runners in the Democratic party, also has ancestors who practiced polygamy. And it wasn’t his great-grandparents who did this (well, I guess I don’t know that for sure, maybe they did too) but it was instead his father who was the polygamist. Yes, I said father. Much closer relation to Obama than great-grandparents are to Romney. In case you missed that tidbit of interesting information, I suggest you check this article out.

What is mind-boggling to me is that although the media is more than willing to make a big deal out of Romney’s relations, they haven’t made a peep about Obama’s. Why? I think it’s because in Africa, it is an accepted practice for a man to have multiple wives. Therefore, accepting Obama’s father’s polygamy is simply being open to other cultures, which is politically correct. Romney, on the other hand, has ancestors who were polygamists because of religious reasons, and that is as far from politically correct as you can find.

Do I believe that someone’s ancestors ought to count when I am trying to decide who to vote for, for president of the United States? No, not in the least. I just think that it’s only fair that if Romney is going to be held accountable for something he can’t control, Obama ought to be too. At least Romney hasn’t lied about his relations, which Obama did in his book, Dreams From My Father. Much of that book is half-truths and “spin” and I don’t see any of the mainstream media calling him out onto the carpet for it.

Let’s focus on what a candidate stands for, where the candidate will want to take the country, and what the candidate will work to achieve in office, and leave the ancestry to the experts: Genealogists.
