I just read on the “Elect Romney in 2008” a blog called “If you thought Sharpton was a bigot, just read this.” It’s a rather long blog written by Bill Keller, a rabid anti-Mormon. There isn’t a whole lot to it other than some insane ramblings of a crazy guy who says that any Mormon is going to go to hell. Make sure to read at the end where Ann puts in her own comments, and then of course check out the comments section where yours truly talks on and on and on and on…
Yes, I know you get that around here too (in fact that’s about all you get around here) but in this case, my comment was insightful.
I’m ever so humble, I know.
Back on topic here: When I watched the PBS special on Mormons, I wasn’t overly offended by it because although there were things in it that I didn’t agree with them emphasizing (like how there are still splinter groups today that practice polygamy, and then they showed interviews of these people for 10 minutes, as if that had anything at all to do with Mormons today) I didn’t see anything overtly horrible about it. I went to church that Sunday as usual, and was surprised to see many in the congregation up in arms about how biased the piece was. I guess perhaps I’ve just been deadened by having to deal with this subject too much myself, but I honestly didn’t think it was that bad.
Pieces like the one written by Bill Keller are the ones that are really out there, and that make me crazy. These kinds of spewings where the author has nothing to say but “You’re going to die in the fires of hell!” are the things that are difficult for me to not get angry and upset about. Heck, the PBS special looked like a veritable love fest in comparison to Bill Keller.
As an aside, if you want to read an active and wonderful blog by evangelicals supporting Mitt’s run for president, check out the Evangelicals for Mitt blog. It’s definitely worth the time to read and support. The guys there are great, and we’re lucky to have them on our side.
When I started this blog, I wrote about how I worried about Romney running for president, because this would give all of the anti-Mormons out there a reason to really go at the LDS Church. I even said that a small part of me wished that Romney was Baptist or Protestant, just so we didn’t have to worry about all of this junk being said.
I knew that Mitt running for president would give the anti-Mormons a reason to really whip themselves into a tizzy, and yet I still rooted for Romney. You want to know why? Because when all is said and done, Mitt is still the man for job, and I believe with all my heart that he is exactly what this country needs. We have a chance to make history here, to elect someone who will lead this country in the right direction, and who will help turn things around. We need to stop worry about what the bigoted anti-Mormons will say, because they’ve been around since day one, since the First Vision, and there is nothing we can do about that. Romney running, or Romney not running, won’t change that fact.
Our support of Mitt Romney should never waiver because these idiots are out there, blathering complete lies about the Church (see my comment on the Elect Romney blog to see one of the obvious lies in this guy’s rantings easily disproved.) If we waiver, the idiots, the bigots, and the jerks of the world win.
I for one refuse to see that happen.
