I talked on Sunday about the interview that Governor Romney gave with 60 Minutes, and how I thought the piece was fair and unbiased, a real relief after the hit piece Times did on him.
Apparently I wasn’t the only one impressed; according to this video out of WBZ TV (hat tip to Elect Romney in 2008,) the piece gave Romney a significant increase in his poll numbers in the early primary states of New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida, and Iowa. He gained a lot more voters than he lost from doing the interview; check out the numbers (these are percentages):
- New Hampshire: Gain 15 / Loss 6
- South Carolina: Gain 17 / Loss 5
- Florida: Gain 18 / Loss 4
- Iowa: Gain 21 / Loss 5
He talked about being Mormon, about polygamy, about his change from being pro-choice to pro-life - every topic that is supposed to be a “gotcha!” moment where people say “Whoa, can’t choose this guy” came up, and yet the polling numbers still went through the roof. I have said time and time again that if voters knew his record, knew his stand on the issues, and knew him personally, they would love him. It’s nice to be right - doesn’t happen too often.
