My Thoughts on the Immigration Bill

Warning: The following blog is not for the faint of heart. I do not pull punches, and almost everyone who reads it will not like what I say. With that warning, I give you my thoughts on this immigration bill:

Right now we have a bill sitting before the Senate that will completely reform the way we deal with immigration issues in America. The question is, will the reform make our laws better or worse?

As I have heard the debates rage over whether we should pass this bill or not (and I have been paying very close attention to this over the weekend - the conservative talk show hosts have been going NUTS over this issue!) I just have one thing to say: How are we even debating this? How can anyone give an intelligent opinion on this matter, when the bill isn’t even written yet?? The final draft of the bill is scheduled to be done one week after, AFTER the Senate votes on it. How is that even possible? How can we say to the legislators that they have 48 hours to vote on a bill, and oh yeah, by the way, that bill isn’t even finished, complete, finito, yet? That’s outrageous.

I have to ask: What on this green earth is the reason for this rush? Why are we going crazy over this issue, pushing it so hard, practically ramrodding it through, when this is the same issue we’ve been dealing with for the last 40 years? If we don’t pass this bill this week, nothing is going to happen. The world is not going to come to an end. America isn’t going to perish. Los Angeles isn’t going to slide into the Pacific. Life is still going to continue, just as it has for the last however many billions of years life has been on this earth.

It’s like a little kid rushing across the street because he sees a candy store. Stop, look both ways, make sure the street is safe, before you cross. The candy store will still be there if you get to the other side in 2 second or 5 minutes. It isn’t going to magically disappear before your eyes, I give you my solemn promise.

So I say this to both sides of the aisle: Slow down. Make sure this is something you actually want to have happen. McCain is pushing very, very hard for this to go through right away, because he thinks it’ll get bogged down and not passed if too much time is spent studying the details. You know what? The devil is in the details, and we’ve got to make sure we aren’t signing into law a hellacious bill that the devil would be ever so happy to preside over.

I am also using this blog to voice my second criticism of Romney, ever. My first was when he said during the second GOP debates that he supports the No Child Left Behind bill. My second is now: How can you be criticizing a bill you haven’t read? I say this to both sides: You cannot criticize or support something that you have not read. I know that a lot of political blogs and conservative people are going crazy with happiness over the fact that Romney is the only first tier candidate who is coming out against this bill and fighting it tooth and nail. And in the end, I’m sure that I will be right there beside Romney, cheering him on in his fight, because the idea that I could possibly endorse and be happy about a bill that was written by McCain (a maverick who considered becoming a Democrat for several years and who I don’t think has the best interests of America at heart) and Kennedy, the most liberal of liberal Demmies out there, is minuscule to almost completely nonexistent. The fact that Bush supports is does pretty much nothing for me, since he was the driving factor behind the Medicaid benefits (with no way to fund the bill) and behind No Child Left Behind, which I have already stated I hate. Bush endorsing or not endorsing something matters little to me, either way.

When the final bill is presented and the American public is actually able to read it, I’m sure I’ll be screaming with the loudest of them that we have to kill it.

But I won’t scream until it is done, and the final draft approved. I wish the rest of America would do the same.

BREAKING NEWS: The Senate decided that they were going to push back the vote on this bill until June, instead of trying to push it through before Memorial Day like they had originally planned on doing. Perhaps that means that the bill might actually be finished before it’s voted on??? Wouldn’t that be a nice thought. From the article, it sounds like a lot of changes are trying to be made by different senators; we’ll see what happens. My gut feeling on this bill is that it’s not what we need, and not where this country should go, but I am waiting to see the final product. I’ll post updates as I get them.
