Because I spent so much time slamming good ol’ Al on this blog (okay fine, here, here, and here too,) I thought it was only fair if I pointed out when he did something right. As this article says, he did go to Utah and have dinner with Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Twelve apostles. Apparently this was not an attempt to apologize - he already apologized to the LDS Church (although he never did apologize to Mitt Romney. Mitt has come out and said that he does not need or expect an apology, which I was very happy with - always take the high road!)

The most interesting quote of the article was this, “Officially, the church will not comment on Romney’s campaign and maintains a position of political neutrality.” Even when the LDS Church is embroiled in this, and has Al Sharpton saying that if you’re Mormon you don’t believe in God, they still won’t get involved. For anyone worried that the LDS Church is going to stick their noses into Mitt trying to run this country, this ought to seal the deal for them. It ain’t happening. Someone as prominent as Al Sharpton can dismiss one of the most basic tenets of the LDS religion (faith in God) and the LDS Church still isn’t going to get into it. They aren’t going to release a statement about Romney, they aren’t going to release a statement about Al, and they welcome Al to SLC where they take him out to dinner and give him a tour of the city. Talk about class, and about political neutrality. It would have been well within the LDS Church’s right to go crazy over this and say, “How dare you?” and cause a big ruckus. They didn’t.

I think this says a lot about the LDS Church. What are your thoughts? Leave them in the comments section!
