How Do You Know America Is Great?

I was listening to Hugh Hewitt on his show on May 21st, interviewing Bill Bennett, and Bill said something profound that I wanted to share:

Bill had a young woman ask him, “Is America great?”

“Yes, it is,” he responded.

“How do you know?” she asked.

“The gates test. Every country has gates, and when those gates are opened, are people running in or running out? Every time we raise the gates in America (and even when we don’t raise the gates) people are running in. Why? Because America is the land where dreams come true.”

What a wonderful way to sum up exactly how I feel about America. Why do we have this immigration bill, and this immigration problem? Because America is where dreams come true, and people want to be able to come in our country so their dreams can come true. They don’t always do it legally, but the fact that there is such a strong draw, such a magnetic pull from all over the globe, tells us and tells the world that we have still have something special here in America.

People may be anti-Americans and may protest and burn flags, but the fact is, we allow people to have that freedom in America. We are a truly free nation. What a blessing that is.

I want to close this blog with a cartoon you may have already seen, but I think is particularly appropriate. Some of the “We hate America” crowd doesn’t understand what America is all about, and they spend their time trying to tear America down. Michael Moore is one who I think is one of the leaders of this movement, and I think this cartoon illustrates my thoughts on his new documentary of Cuba’s health care perfectly:

Michael Moore in Cuba

Couldn’t have said it better myself.
