Breaking News: Fred Thompson has Dropped out of the Race

He entered last, he left first**. I think in a lot of ways, that sums up his run for presidency. I don’t know that Fred ever really had his heart in it.

But even though I’m a dedicated Mitt supporter, I’m going to miss Thompson, and I’m sad to see him go. It was fun to watch the debates, and listen to his southern drawl. At the last debate (and I’m paraphrasing here) when Huckabee claimed that his last job had been getting rid of death (when he worked as a pastor) and now his new job was getting rid of taxes, Fred said with a chuckle, “Huckabee, you didn’t do a good job of it [getting rid of death] - you should probably go back and try again.” That made me laugh out loud. I don’t do that often during debates.

Most of all, I’m going to miss the fact that Fred stood for many of the things that conservatives everywhere stand for: State’s rights, right to life, securing the boarder, etc. Mitt cannot be everywhere at once, and so when Thompson was talking about these issues, it was helping the Republican party remember once again why we are a party, and what we believe in.

I am also proud of Fred Thompson for not only seeing the handwriting on the wall, but responding to it by bowing out. This race is one for the record books, and in a tight race like this, you need to consolidate behind a candidate who can actually win, instead of spreading out the votes between five candidates. Kudos to Fred for understanding that. This was one of the points of a blog that I wrote yesterday (Why I Choose Mitt Romney Over Ron Paul) - that if you spread out the votes too much between the various conservative candidates, you’re going to end up with John McCain as the nominee. And since John has positioned himself as the moderate/independent candidate, instead of the conservative candidate, if we nominate McCain, the conservative movement will have just lost a crucial battle in bringing this country back to its roots.

So I say welcome to all FredHeads - I hope you can feel at home with us MittHeads. ;-) I think as you look over Mitt’s stance on various issues, that you’ll see that Fred and Mitt had much more in common with each other than you might have guessed. Mitt is a pro-life, boarder-securing, economy-fixing guru, and I believe with him as president, we will help get past the Bush years, and bring the Republican party back to where it belongs: The standard-bearer for conservatives.

**Out of the first-tier candidates, of course. Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo both dropped out previously, but they were considered second-tier candidates.

That is true. I would have supported Thompson if he had a “fire in the belly” like so many people said he lacked. I liked that he was easy going but maybe too easy going. I will miss Fred’s sense of humor in the debates. I do like how he was smart enough to see that he needed to pull out so the votes would not be spread so thin. So this is to all Fred heads…welcome to Mitt Romney’s campaign. We welcome you to join us Mitt Heads and support a conservative for President.

I’ve heard people say that they thought him not having “fire in the belly” was a good thing, because you shouldn’t be obsessed with becoming POTUS. The problem with that reasoning is, being POTUS is the hardest job on planet Earth. You can’t do it half-heartedly. You are always on, and when you go to the doctor, or when you invite someone to dinner or to spend the night, it makes front page news across the nation, and sometimes, across the world.

You can’t live under that kind of scrutiny and still be sane by the end if it wasn’t something that you were 175% committed to doing.

I do wish that Fred would reconsider his stance on VP though. I think him as Mitt’s VP would be an awesome ticket.

Hi Guys & Gals I just wanted to point out that the “fire in the belly” thing was concieved by the MSM they needed something to throw at Fred because they could not come up with any other points to hit him on. If you have any doubt on this, Just Look at how he threw it all into Iowa & S.C. (I actually thought he was starting to get a surge in S.C. before he bowed out). He definately had a strong presense in the debates & I could have sworn I saw some MAJOR sparks if not fire going on in the last Iowa debate with that liberal mediator and at the S.C. debate with Huck. The other MSM hit on Fred was that the “he entered the race to late tag” when he entered when candidates normally enter. Everyone just started going after the prize earlier this year, Yes he should have hopped in earlier too… That was a lesson learned I am sure. Just wanted to clear those points up. I am sure that the long time Mitt supporters would probably like to shut up the MSM for quite a few spins they have kicked off against Mitt as well (no need for me to point them out you are probably well aware of them). I have to agree with Havs that I wish Fred would reconsider the VP nomination he would give Mitt the 4th leg to the stool on the Foreign Affairs / National Security side with his experience ! (the only leg that McCain has that he is trying to balance himself on). Great debate last night I am glad they hit on the Economy right off I knew Mitt could run away with that!!! I would like to thank most of you folks for welcoming us Former Fredheads over to the campaign. Mitt is the sole remaining Conservative on the ticket now! I am really concerned about our future appointed Supreme Court Judges and I need a president that will appoint conservatives into those positions, and stand up for the conservative principles that our party should stand for. Thats why I am over here now, & thats why I am supporting Mitt

Hi Hooligan!!! Welcome aboard the Mitt Romney Express. Next stop: Washington DC! ;-) Thanks for switching your support to Mitt Romney, who I agree is definitely the only conservative left in the race.

I read a blog by a gentleman who said he was an American first, conservative second, and Republican last. I didn’t understand that - I thought at the time that all Republicans were conservatives. After all, wasn’t that the default definition of Republican?

Now that I am paying a lot more attention to politics than I ever had before (I was not active in politics previous to March 2007) I realize how spot on that declaration was. I used to be one of those people who cheered for the Republican candidate, whoever it was, and thought that as long as they had that little R behind their name, I would be okay. Now I understand that it truly isn’t that easy. The most liberal of liberals could call himself a Republican, and there is nothing anyone could do about it. There isn’t a test you have to pass before you can put the R behind your name. Anyone can do it, and is evident in this election, more than a few liberals have.

Fred had more “fire in the belly” and more “passion” then any candidate since Reagan.. too bad you guys were too blind to see it. But I still am a Fredhead will always be a fredhead and I have no problem becoming a Mitthead. For both of them are good conservatives. Good luck Mitt team, and go get em.. for us fredheads. We got your back! :)

“Before anything else, folks in Washington ought to be asking first and foremost, ‘Should government be doing this? And if so, then at what level of government?’ But they don’t.” - Fred Thompson.
