My name is Havilah, although I go by Hava or Havs online (I’m lazy, what can I say? Havilah’s a long name.) I was born and raised in the LDS Church, and have been active all my life. I’m the fourth child out of five, and I love my family dearly. My father was a Marine for 20 years, so I was raised as a military brat (lots of emphasis on brat!) and lived all over the world before my father retired when I was 12. He was from a very small, very rural town in Idaho, and when he retired, we moved back to his hometown.
When I graduated from high school in 1999, I went to Ricks College (which became BYU-Idaho after I left) for a year, during which my roommate told me about a neat college called BYU-Jerusalem. I applied, and got accepted into the Fall 2000 program.
I spent three months in Jerusalem and other parts of Israel (including when I lived at the Sea of Galilee for three weeks) and got to also travel to Jordan and Egypt. I climbed Mount Sinai on the back of a camel, and snorkeled and swam in the Red Sea. It was a wonderful experience, but it was cut short when the Second Intifada broke out and violence spread like a rash across Jerusalem and Israel. We were sent home a month early, and I never got to see the pyramids of Egypt, which I really regret. The violence was so bad, the Center only very recently opened up for another class to come, seven years after my class left. I was so lucky to experience the Middle East, and it gave me a sense of great empathy for both sides of that struggle.
I ended up Logan, Utah where I met my husband in the fall of 2001. In fact, the first time I clearly remember seeing him was the day of the 9-11 attacks. My apartment had the only cable reception in the complex, and he stopped by to watch the news. It was so crowded, he was forced to stand in the doorway, practically on the front porch, in order to see what was happening.
From those very humble beginnings, Doug and I eventually fell in love and got married in 2002, in the Idaho Falls Temple. We moved up to Idaho and bought a house - we don’t have any children, but we do have two mangy pups we adopted from the pound who love us to no end, and who drive me crazy to no end (like I really needed the help). We recently moved from the east side of the state to the west side, and I currently have three jobs: Librarian at the local library, pulling records at the local courthouse, and writing text messages about Mitt Romney for a company called 80108.com. For more info on the text messages and how to sign up for the service if you’re so inclined, check out this page. I also have a personal blog at WordPress.com that I update occasionally with random stories about me - some of the archives are pretty darn funny (I can be a real idiot, and I don’t mind telling others about it. That about sums that blog up).
As for this blog, I am actually pretty late to the political scene compared to others. I consider myself a Mitthead, but a year ago, I didn’t even know Mitt Romney existed. How did I go from total oblivion to Mitthead? It’s simple - I started studying him. The more I read about him, the more I realized: This is who America needs. We need a strong leader who is dedicated to doing the right thing, even at the expense of popularity.
First, he impressed me with his vision: When Romney states his ideas about something, he doesn’t offer generalities and platitudes, he offers specifics and a far-reaching plan. We need someone with that kind of vision.
Second, he is a self-made millionaire, and his success in the private sector has transferred over smoothly into the political arena. Sick of career politicians? You’ve found your choice in Romney. He knows how to succeed outside of the political arena, and that experience shows. Yet he isn’t so new to politics that he would end up having to “experiment” on America. He has experience in both the private sector and in politics, and that is extremely appealing to me.
What draws you to Romney? Feel free to leave comments on the blogs or contact me - I love feedback and will always respond. I hope you enjoy my blog, and come back often.
